According to the 2008 Annual Status of Education Report (ASER), released by NGO Pratham Foundation, primary education in Tamil Nadu fared poorly as compared to all other states.
With only 54.7% of students in classes I and II able to read letters and words, TN figured last on the nation-wide list. Kerala and Goa shared the top slot, registering 98.6%. In Karnataka, 83.4% students and in Puducherry 73.5% students of classes I and II could read letters and words.
